From Deaconess Elizabeth

Meet Deaconess Elizabeth:

Hi my name is Elizabeth Wagner, and I’m your new deaconess intern! I completed my deaconess course work and Concordia Seminary St. Louis, alongside the Master of Social Work program at St. Louis University. I received my MSW degree in August and have one more year of internship left before I graduate with a Master of Deaconess Studies from the Seminary. I grew up in Saginaw, MI, but I was born right here in St. Louis! My husband and I live in Valley Park, where he is the pastor of Zion Lutheran Church. Come see us if you are ever in the area! I’m very excited to be working with Timothy for the next year and can’t wait to meet all of you.

 What is a Deaconess?

“LCMS deaconesses are women who are professional church-workers, trained to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through works of mercy, spiritual care, and teaching the Christian faith. ‘Deaconess,’ from the Greek word diakonos, means ‘servant.’”-- LCMS Website

What Does a Deaconess Do?

Today, Deaconesses serve in primarily three areas of the church:

  1. Missions - Deaconesses serve in missions both in the United States and the world.
  2. Congregations - Deaconesses often teach the faith, visit the sick and injured, or serve in a ministry such as a family ministry.
  3. Institutions - Many deaconesses serve as chaplains in institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. To serve as a chaplain, deaconesses must undergo extra training, called Clinical Pastoral Education. As a chaplain, the deaconess works alongside ordained ministers, who preach and administer the sacraments, where deaconesses do not.
