A Message from our VBS Team

Pray & Participate in VBS this week

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.  But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”  And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  - Mark 4:37-31

We have an interesting VBS theme this year, Shipwrecked – Rescued by Jesus.  Our Gospel text today gives us a compelling story of a ship with passengers in danger.  There was real fear of death in these disciples, many of which were experienced fisherman who braved many angry waves.  This is a well-known story, and it is compelling because we know the punch-line.  The men fearing their death had right in their midst the One who could knock out the danger with a single word.  Yet they scrambled to steer the best course, and bail the water that was filling the boat with every crashing wave, and hang on for their lives.

Many church sanctuaries resemble the body a ship.  A church I attended in St. Paul always struck me as looking like Noah’s ark upside-down.  Often times there are connections drawn with the worshipping body in this ship-like building to Noah and God’s rescue and promise with our baptismal promise.  But here is another connection.  God is right there with us.  When we come to the sanctuary with the storms of life weighing on us, God is there.  And He can rescue us with His Word.

The presence of God right there with us in the storms of life is not known to everyone.  Children sometimes think the world is ending when something bad happens, not having personal experience of a storm of this kind passing.  Some who come from families who don’t know Jesus and are missing faith, don’t look Him for rescue.  They think they are on their own, or dependent on the flawed humanity around them.  They fear the ultimate storm they cannot navigate through or bail their way out of…they fear death.

VBS is an opportunity for God’s people to be in the boat with people who need encouragement, reminders, and introductions to a caring, rescuing God.  They can spend time with people who can show them faith and how to ask Jesus for rescue.  In VBS we share Jesus in a hands-on, loving and fun community environment.

We are so thankful that many, many people of all ages support this outreach of the Gospel and encouragement to our faith in so many ways.  Join us in praying for this week where God is at work building His Kingdom, bringing peace and faith to those in need of rescue.
