Stephen Ministers Commissioning
On February 12, Timothy is commissioning five new Stephen Ministers: Judith Meyer, Cheryl O'Neill, Carol Simon, Jim Smith and Katie Weintrab. Timothy also will recognize Amanda and Mark Barbeau from Stephen Ministries who completed the 50-hour training program with us.
With this class, Timothy partnered with Lindenwood Area Senior Ministry to begin Stephen Ministry in our broader community. Carol and Katie will serve as the first two LASM Stephen Ministers. Timothy’s Stephen Ministers may also serve older people identified through LASM, who need a Christ-centered caregiver who is a good listener.
During their 50 hours of training, these seven people learned how to be compassionate, full of faith, skilled and trustworthy. They worked on listening skills, understanding feelings, and working with people dealing with grief and depression. All of them acknowledged thankfully that a key component of their learning was the recognition that their responsibility focuses on the process of caregiving. Stephen Ministers and their care-receivers let God take care of the results. That is why prayer and Scriptures are such important tools for Stephen Ministers.
The five new Stephen Ministers join a team of 11 active Stephen Ministers who provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to people experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receiver for about an hour to listen, care, encourage, pray, and provide emotional and spiritual support for the person. Caring relationships last for as long as the person’s need persists.
The whole team of Stephen Ministers meets monthly for continuing education and supervision. Without breaking the confidentiality of their care-receivers, they share their process goals for ministry and support each other with advice and prayer.
Timothy’s Stephen Ministry is a key part of our congregation’s care for each other. In the more than 20 years that we have had a Stephen Ministry, we have trained more than 60 Stephen Ministers; more than 45 of them are still members of our congregation. Although not all of our trained Ministers are active at this time, their listening and caring skills make a difference for our members. Please pray for the continuing effectiveness of Stephen Ministry, both within our congregation and now in the Lindenwood Area as well.
