Has anyone ever asked you, “Why do you follow Jesus?” I can’t imagine that no one has ever asked you that. But what do you give as your answer? The first time I can remember anyone asking me that was when I was in confirmation and I couldn’t give a better answer than - ”Because.” Not a too enlightened thought!
Since then I have given this very question a great deal of thought and after spending much time in God’s Word I can say that I follow Jesus, because... He is Jesus. I follow Jesus because he is the Christ, because it is true. I don’t follow Christ to get eternal life, though that is one of the blessings that comes from following him. I simply follow because of who he is, I would follow even if I got nothing out of it.
One day we will all be forced to answer this question, one day we will all have to deal with God the Judge. This is the God that frightens us all and we don’t want to deal with Him. But he forces us to deal with Him. Either it will be in fear, love and trust - or just plain fear. Salvation is about a relationship, it’s not something that we try to earn for ourselves, no, it is through a relationship with Jesus, whom we follow. As Bob Dylan once sang, “You may be the heavyweight champion of the world. You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls, But You’re gonna serve Somebody... It may be the devil or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”
Serving the Lord because He’s the Lord,
